I hope that you aren't referring to DxO when you mentioned THOSE guys but I suspect their name starts with a C :). If still no luck, I will have the lens/camera combo checked by Nikon in NZ to see if they can improve things. However, I will switch of AF fine tune just to confirm either way. It looks like I am getting the best sharpness at an AF fine tune setting of -3. So yes, I do believe that my copy of the 200-500 is soft and not just at 500mm. For as far as I can tell there is no difference in how the NEF file shows to be honest. Like you, I also thought of using NX-D so I could compare to DxO. and the images I create are only used by Nikon to show what the cameras and lenses can do in hopes that people like you look at them and then want to buy our cameras.

there will be a lot of people rolling their eyes and claiming that I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm not saying the this will work for you, but it might work. The next step I would try would be to try turning off the calibration setting in the camera.
#Z6 NEF DXO PHOTOLAB SOFTWARE#
be that the software is softening the file. Their RAW file processor is know to add noise to a Nikon NEF file during processing. almost to the point you might not think there is any other company capable of processing a RAW file. the different RAW processors do some funky things to files. or the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" actually has some value to it.Īs far as softness in the NEF file when processed through DxO. Other copies of the body and lens worked perfectly.Įither I am the single luckiest guy on the planet. My first D3x and the fourth copy of the 105mm f/2 DC. In all those different lens/body combinations, I have had to calibrate my focus exactly: once. Multiple copies of each camera in most cases. In that time, I have shot every camera model we have made. I have worked for Nikon for nearly 25 years. Maybe that is the answer? However, I expected more from the 200-500mm F/5.6.ĭanD_NZ: I almost never calibrate my glass. I don't think I would have picked up any lens softness had I only ever used JPG. Hence I discovered the softness in the raw files. I normally only shoot in raw and then do my PP in DxO PhotoLab. However, I find the NEF shows the softness. The Z6 applies default sharpening to the raw NEF file to produce a JPG (I assume the Z7 does the same). There clearly is some hope for me then :) I will attempt a different lens calibration over the weekend (discussed here: and see if I can improve anything. But I haven't tried it again since the new firmware update. Recently I had the combo out and about at a sports photo workshop and captured some nice moments.Īnd even used it to grab some video footage at a swim practice.Īll in all, I'm pretty pleased with what I have gotten so far. I am not having any issues with the Z6 and 200-500mm working together. I'd love to hear from you again in the near future and compare note so to speak. I didn't know about FoCal so, looking into it. If no-one has replied to you by then I'll pop back here with an update. I then will go out and check it out for sharpness. I've not tried it yet, I am waiting to check AF fine tune calibration on my F mount lenses when the final release of FoCal 2.9 is released. I have been wondering whether the anti-aliasing filter (low pass filter) causes this? Your comments, hints, tips, suggestions are all welcome. Even when a larger bird such as a shag (which is much larger than a kingfisher). I find I pretty much have to sharpen all my bird pics post processing. Hi there, is it just me being picky and fussy or are there other people out there with their Z6 and 200-500mm F/5.6 that experience soft images at 100% crop? I often try and photograph the little kingfisher and at 30m it is only just larger than the center focus sensor.
